Doctoral School

A first of its kind structured Ph.D. program in Ukraine, it introduced global standards of research, current practices in the EU, institutional transparency, academic autonomy, and a collaborative approach between education and research. Each student and candidate work closely with a faculty mentor throughout their tenure at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.

Scientific research at NaUKMA is carried out across six NaUKMA Schools and their 32 departments, within its 35 research centers and laboratories. The total number of full-time researchers and teaching staff is almost 600, 20% of which whom are PhDs and another half are Ph.D. candidates.

To increase the efficiency of its research efforts, the NaUKMA Doctoral School organizes and conducts them in three categories. The first category is research work carried out at the expense of the state budget of Ukraine.

The project topics are approved by the Ministry of Education and commence at the start of the new calendar year. They are financed in accordance with the submitted budgets and the amount of state funding available for fundamental and applied research.

The second category of research is projects carried out by the departments and research centers of NaUKMA with the help of grants from international and Ukrainian foundations and donors. The third category includes topics registered in UkrINTEI and worked on by faculty and graduate students of a certain department or research unit.

NaUKMA publishes the results of its research activity in its 17 peer-reviewed scientific journals. All articles have open access, and free of charge. Users may read, download, copy, distribute, and print the full text of journal articles without prior permission from the publisher or author, but must assign proper credit to the author (according to the Budapest Open Access Initiative). NaUKMA is the first Ukrainian university to support the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Natural Sciences and Humanities.
