Posthumous degrees were awarded to the Heroes

Hlib Ivanov and Valentyn Demianenko

were honored at the ceremony

Not all of the graduates were able to attend the Convocation this year. Sadly, many Kyiv-Mohyla students are fighting against the enemy on the battlefield as volunteers. This year, we lost fifteen members of our KMA Family, among whom Hlib Ivanov,  who was studying Political Science, completed his academic requirements, and was scheduled to receive his diploma this summer. He lost his life in January 2023 during the Battle for Bakhmut. His diploma was presented to his parents. Hlib’s parents attended the ceremony to take his diploma for him, and the entire community of students, faculty, parents, and guests honored him with a long-standing ovation and applause. Hlib’s father Jaroslav Ivanov is also a member of Ukraine’s Armed Forces and spent five months in Bakhmut, where he was wounded twice.

Along with Hlib, his friend Valentyn Demianenko also died in Bakhmut from missile attacks. Valentin Demianenko was supposed to graduate from Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in 2022 with a degree in economics. However, on February 24th, he took an academic leave and voluntarily joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He had planned to return to his studies in February 2023 and complete his university education but lost his life in January 2023.
