Since September 30 to October 2, students, parents, and teachers, felt the Kyiv-Mohyla family spirit at the dedication ceremonies of the incoming class.  Even at this time of war, 1100 first year students were accepted for the 2022-2023 academic year.  With 5000 students, National University Kyiv-Mohyla Academy is ready for the challenges of online and in-person learning during the current violent war when missiles and drones are falling over the center of Kyiv.

Now more than ever, the importance of educating leaders for Ukraine is the key for Ukraine’s victory and the reconstruction that will lead to European integration.  The admission ceremony took place just days before the latest round of Russian missile attacks over Kyiv, but the spirit of the freshman class was filled with optimism.

Because sirens continue to sound with warnings in Kyiv, the ceremonies took place over two days, and in various locations.  Parents and students felt a sense of joy and pride in being accepted to Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.  As they listened to inspiring speeches from faculty members, many felt solidarity and bravery now during the war.  When the packed sang Gaudeamus Igitur and the Ukrainian National Anthem, there was an impressive feeling of determination and courage during the possible missile strikes.

The Department of Computer Science held its ceremony in a bomb shelter because sires began to wail.  As the sound of sirens was heard, the singing of the Ukrainian National Anthem by everyone present grew louder.  Andriy Glybovets, dean of the Department of Computer Science commented in his welcome speech,  “It is symbolic that instead of celebrating at the Cultural Centre Assembly Hall, our ceremony is taking place in the bomb shelter during an air alert that was announced in Kyiv and in all of Ukraine, but we will not cancel our work and our ceremonies because we cannot be broken. This is proof that each and every one of us is in his or her place, because we are all doing our jobs to help the Armed Forces of Ukraine to win this war.  Our Department of Computer Science is contributing with significant technology.”

The ceremonies included formalities but also a welcome festival that takes place each year at the campus known as “FreshFest”.  Even though classes and academic activities take place mostly online due to security concerns, there still are many cultural offline events on campus.

The goal of the FreshFest is to help new students get to know each other and to introduce them to the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy organizations and various university departments.

Every student organization prepared a presentation to show their activity and achievements including a charitable flea market with crafts made by students, lectures, and a student concert.  The profit from these activities was sent as a donation for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The event reflected the spirit of hope for peace with best wishes for Ukraine's new generation.  It reinforced the fact that education plays a central role in providing the knowledge and the values necessary to rebuild Ukraine

The national budget is focused on the war effort resulting in serious cuts to education. The university needs your help to provide scholarships, and the best education for a deserving, courageous young generation of future leaders.  Thank you for your support.
