In honor of what would have been Omeljan Pritsak’s 100th birthday, Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute (HURI) and Kyiv-Mohyla Foundation of America co-sponsored a commemorative conference with our colleagues at the Omeljan Pritsak Center for Oriental Studies of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.

As part of the celebration, Profs. Serhii Plokhii and George Grabowicz presented papers and chaired panels. Prof. Grabowicz discussed Omeljan Pritsak’s role in the revival of Ukrainian studies in the West, while Prof. Plokhii gave an overview of 50 years of Ukrainian studies at Harvard.

The founder and first director of HURI, Pritsak, was an eminent Turkologist and professor at Harvard University. His library, private archive and art collection were transferred to the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in 2008. The following year, the Omeljan Pritsak Center for Oriental Studies was established at the Academy.
