On 28 March, the Cabinet of Ministers appointed Oleh Petrenko as head of the National Health Service. Petrenko was selected among 14 candidates in an open competition.
Petrenko obtained his medical degree from the Vinnytsia National Medical Pyrohovo University. He also has a degree from the Ukrainian School of Political Studies, established in 2005 with collaboration of the Council of Europe to support young change-makers in Ukraine. In 2006 he was awarded a Master’s Degree from the Kyiv-Mohyla School of Public Health in Public Health Management.
Acting Minister of Health Dr. Ulana Suprun expressed support for his appointment. “”Oleh Petrenko has solid positive experience in the field of health care. He is an experienced manager and one of the experts who developed the concept of reforming the health care system, which is the basis of the law on changes in the financing of medicine”.
The National Health Service was established in late December 2017 and is expected to become operational in mid-2018. It is essential to implementing health reform. It will sign contracts with hospitals whose doctors will be compensated from the budget for every patient assigned to them.
