Professor Oleksiy Haran is one of the most engaged political commentators in the international media, in leading newspapers, journals, television and radio programs, and as a participant in international conferences throughout the world. Oleksiy Haran is the research director at the Ilko Kucheriv Fund of Democratic Initiatives, and professor at National University “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”.

He is part of the history and lore of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy from its re-establishment in 1991. Dr. Haran was a member of the first group of faculty members at NaUKMA, and the first dean and organizer of the Department of Social Science in 1993-1994. He became the first chair of the Department of Political Science. In 1996-1997 he was a member of the group that established the newspaper Den. In 2002, he established the School of Political Analysis at NaUKMA, and served as its research director. In 2005-2006, he was the regional vice-president of the Eurasia Foundation for Ukraine, Belorus and Moldova.

Oleksiy Haran received his doctorate in 1996. The topic of his dissertation was “Establishment and activities of the political opposition in Ukraine in 1989-1991”.

His concentration of research is Ukraine’s history of the 20-21st centuries with a focus on the triangular relationship of European Union – Ukraine – Russia, on the influence of internal factors between Ukraine and the EU, and comparative political factors of Ukraine and the European nations – elections, political parties, and the relationship between the balance of power of the executive, judicial, and legislative branches.
