Kyiv-Mohyla Academy joined the global campaign in support of Oleg Sentsov. A banner #FreeOlegSentsov with a call of support for the journalist who is surviving his 100th day on a hunger strike while imprisoned illegally by Russia was displayed on the façade of the main building, with activists demanding his release.
The university’s students Hleb Kuzmenko and Kolya Rybytva organized the public rally for the release of Ukrainian film director Oleh Sentsov and other political prisoners and hostages illegally detained in Russian prisons.
Students, faculty and administration members, and public activists and artists joined the initiative on the street. Students Elizabeth Koval took responsibility for communications, Oleksandr Matviychuk, who initiated the action also selected the banner.
Pro-bono work for printing by Andriy Pyatigin, owner of Copycenter on Skovoroda Street, and by Pavlo Kaliuk, co-founder of Podolyanochka and his father Alexander, who took responsibility for the installation, resulted in significant savings. The funds earmarked for the initiative were turned over to help the mother of Alexander Kolchenko, a Ukrainian activist, who along with Sentsov and others was arrested and imprisoned in Russia after the illegal annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation. Fundraising continues through the Solidarity Committee, a Crimean hostage support group at http://solidarityua.info/
